April Johnston served up her dark glamour and edgy aesthetic on Project Runway season 8 then returned for the debut season of Project Runway All Stars. These days, she's still creating her own brand of gothic romanticism with her label Mangled Courtesan.
I caught up with April to dish on her latest adventures, which included having her stunning designs featured on America's Next Top Model cycle 20.
Mondo Guerra: Your designs were recently featured on ANTM Cycle 20--CONGRATS! Tell us how that opportunity came about and how it felt to see supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio rock some Mangled Courtesan.
April Johnston: I was so stoked when I got a call from my friend who worked as a stylist on the show, she was looking for black, sexy, and fierce looks for the models and Alessandra Ambrosio. Who better than me to dress them in my dark, seductive line entitled "Mangled Courtesan"! It was a dream come true for me as well as my embellisher Leslie Miller, we high fived when we got the news!
MG: You made the move from Savannah, GA to Philly. How are you liking your new city?
AJ: I love Philly, and am so excited to start a new journey here. I will miss Savannah, but Philly has so much to offer and the city is so much bigger.
MG: Have you been watching season 12 of Project Runway? What are your thoughts? Any stand-outs so far? As a former contestant and All Star, any words of wisdom you can share with the new designers?
AJ: I have witnessed a few episodes and I would have to say I am very disappointed with the way the contestants act on the show, most of them are adults and they definitely aren't acting like it. My advice would be to focus more on designing and not on the drama, keep your emotions in check!
MG: What's next for you and Mangled Courtesan?
AJ: I am busy working on the new collection, set to debut at St. Louis Fashion week as well as also sending my NOIR Collection off to the World Chess Hall of Fame for their exhibit "A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes, Fashion and Chess." A lot is happening and I can't wait to also see all my Project Runway comrades at the finale runway show at MBFW in NYC soon!
