I have a confession to make. While Project Runway will always be my favorite show, I also love RuPaul’s Drag Race — a reality TV competition to find America’s next drag superstar. So when I was approached by season six contestant Laganja Estranja to create some custom designs, I jumped at the chance!
As a wink to Laganja’s “marijuana moniker,” I designed a dress with unconventional embellishments — green paillettes packed in happy-faced dime bags. A new spin on polka dots, if you will.
Of course, the delivery date for the design snuck up on me and I found myself in “challenge mode,” like I was back in the Project Runway workroom. Luckily, I had some late-night help from a very special designer.
Team Mondo designer Michelle Uberreste from Under The Gunn was visiting Denver and she lent her skills to helping me put the finishing touches on the dress.
Laganja looked incredible in her custom design at the LA premiere for season six of RuPaul’s Drag Race in February. I love seeing a design come to life!
What do you think of the design? I hope you enjoy a sneak peek behind the scenes at the making of this dress!
And be sure to root for Laganja on RuPaul’s Drag Race Mondays at 9/8c on Logo!
